The mysterious staircase

Qui si trovano le gole di Capodarso ed una serie di magnifici ambienti naturali, non solo fluviali, che costituiscono un forte elemento di richiamo per gli amanti del turismo d’ambiente. Ampie gorene, con meandri e pozze di acqua salata, tale è l’acqua del fiume, sono habitat per diverse specie ornitiche sia di passo che stanziali, tra le quali le folaghe, le gallinelle d’acqua, diversi ardeidi, ma anche di rettili ed anfibi, mammiferi e centinaia di specie di invertebrati.
Nei mesi primaverili ed estivi, non è raro incontrare la testuggine palustre (Emys orbicularis) che si nasconde tra la vegetazione acquatica per sorprendere le sue prede.
La riserva, facilmente raggiungibile sia da Enna che da Caltanissetta, difende anche alcuni tra i maggiori siti della civiltà mineraria siciliana: la vallata, spettacolare con le due cime di Capodarso ad est e Sabucina a ovest, popolata sin dalla più remota antichità, ha scavato i depositi dell’altipiano gessoso solfifero sino a favorire la coltivazione di miniere di zolfo su ambedue le rive. Nacquero così la miniera di Trabonella e su quella ennese il complesso minerario di Giumentaro e Giumentarello.

This big stretch of the riverbed includes the Capodarso gorges and a series of magnificent natural environments, and not only fluvial ones, constituting a major attraction for environment-loving tourists.
Big streams, with meanders and salt water pools (for the water of the river is indeed salty), are a habitat for various species of birds, both resident and migratory, including coots, moorhens, various herons, and also reptiles and amphibians, mammals and hundreds of species of invertebrates. In the spring and summer months, it is not rare to come across the marsh turtle, Emys orbicularis, which hides among the aquatic vegetation to pounce on its prey.
The reserve, which you can easily get to both from Enna and from Caltanissetta, also provides a defence for some of the biggest sites of the Sicilian mining civilisation. Indeed, the valley - which is spectacular with the two peaks of Capodarso to the east and Sabucina to the west - has been populated since the remotest antiquity, and its inhabitants have quarried the deposits of the chalk-sulphur plateau and favoured the development of sulphur mines on both banks.
Thus on the Caltanissetta side there arose the Trabonella mine, and on the Enna side the Giumentaro and Giumentarello mining complex.

Con il crollo del mercato dello zolfo siciliano e con il progressivo smantellamento dell’EMS, i due complessi minerari vennero abbandonati ed oggi sembra quasi che i lavoranti, i “carusi” di un tempo, siano fuggiti poche ore prima da chi sa quale minaccia, lasciando sul terreno i cumuli del materiale grezzo, gli utensili, i registri paga, le auto, i mezzi sotterranei.
L’atmosfera, certamente apocalittica, è quella dell’incomprensibile capacità siciliana di dimenticare la propria storia, oggi, tra queste rovine archeologiche di soli vent’anni fa, si aggirano frastornati studenti in visita che, pur essendo figli e nipoti dei minatori, non hanno più alcuna idea di cosa possa celarsi dentro questa terra aspra ma ad un tempo generosa. L’altura di Capodarso, magnifica con la sua lunghissima rocca calcarenitica di colore ambrato, spettacolare al tramonto, nasconde cavità carsiche inesplorate, delle quali un piccolo assaggio è dato da ciò che resta della “Grotta delle Meraviglie”. Inoltre i resti di un centro indigeno ellenizzato, che del monte occupava la cima e del quale rimangono in vista migliaia di cocci ceramici, un muro ad aggere ed una misteriosissima e scenografica scala che scende per alcuni gradini per poi proiettarsi nel vuoto della rocca che guarda a nord ovest. Nessuno ha sinora compreso il significato di questa scala, forse simbolico tragitto verso mondi sovrannaturali o luogo di supplizi, forse, ancora, via di fuga un tempo dotata di corde e scale a pioli. Certamente mistero tramandato per la curiosità di chi ancora ha occhi per questa magnifica Sicilia.

With the collapse of the Sicilian sulphur market and the gradual dismantling of the Sicilian Mining Company, the two mining complexes were abandoned and nowadays it looks as if the workers, the ‘carusi’ of the past, had run away just a few hours ago from goodness knows what threat, leaving on the ground heaps of raw mineral, tools, pay books, cars and underground equipment.
The atmosphere is certainly apocalyptic, it is that of the incomprehensible Sicilian capacity to forget history. Now among these archaeological ruins of just twenty years ago there wander dazed students on visits who, although they are the children and grandchildren of miners, no longer have any idea of what might be hidden under this rugged but once generous earth.
The Capodarso peak, which is magnificent with its very long amber-coloured calcarenite rock, is spectacular at sunset. Also, in it there are both unexplored karst cavities - a little sample of which is afforded by what remains of the cave of wonders - and the remains of a Hellenised indigenous settlement, which occupied the peak of the mountain; the visible vestige of this settlement is thousands of pieces of ceramics, a wall and a very mysterious and scenographic flight
of steps which goes down a short way and then is projected into the void of the rock looking northwest.
So far no one has understood the meaning of this flight of steps, perhaps a symbolic pathway of supernatural worlds or places of torture, or perhaps an escape route once endowed with ropes and rung ladders. Certainly a mystery handed down for the curiosity of those who still have eyes to see this magnificent Sicily.
