Etna from the Saracens' bridge

In questo ambiente selvaggio e panoramicamente di grande effetto, ha sede una comunità vegetale molto specializzata, capace di sopravvivere alle piene ed al caldo dell’estate, al morso delle capre ed al gelo invernale, dando asilo ad una componente faunistica specializzata e rara. Tra le lave occhieggia l’oleandro, capace di sfruttare la benché minima opportunità di attecchimento, mentre nei dintorni, laddove i giardini di agrumi hanno lasciato spazio alla natura, fioriscono asfodeli bianchi e gialli, giunchi, prati ad ortica, papavero e tanaceto, ferle, borragine.
Al sole si riscaldano la biscia dal collare, il ramarro e la lucertola wagleriana, mentre nelle acque s’odono i tonfi sordi dei tuffi della rana esculenta, del discoglosso e dell’ululone.
Dove l’ingrottato sprofonda tra le lave per decine di metri il fiume viene superato dall’antico ponte dei Saraceni, costruito con un’ardita arcata a schiena d’asino, tutta in pietrame lavico misto a calcare bianco.

In this wild environment, which produces a wonderful panoramic effect, there is a very specialised plant community, capable of surviving spates and summer heat, goats' bites and winter frost, giving shelter to a rare and specialised fauna. Among the basaltic and black lavas there winks the oleander, capable of exploiting even the slightest chance of taking root, while around, where the citrus orchards have given way to nature, there flower white and yellow asphodels, reeds, nettles, poppies, tansy, 'ferla' and borage.
The collared grass-snake, the green lizard and Wagler's lizard warm themselves in the sun, while in the waters you hear the dull thuds of the dives of the esculent frog, the Discoglossus pictus and the toad. Just where the river goes deep down into the lava dozens of metres, it is crossed by an old bridge, the so-called Saracen's bridge, built with a bold donkey-back arch, all in lavic stone mixed with white calcareous rock.

Il ponte in realtà non é saraceno ma un misto di diverse opere costruttive: le sue pile tutte rigorosamente dotate di struttura idrodinamica, sono di costruzione romana, probabilmente imperiale (I - II sec. D.C.) ed appartengono alle opere della strada Catina-Centorippe (Catania-Centuripe) che, come ci dicono diverse fonti antiche, rappresentava l’utostrada Palermo - Catania del tempo. In seguito al crollo venne costruito sulle pile romane almeno un altro ponte, aragonese, che, tra crolli e restauri si è mantenuto sino ai giorni nostri.
L’area che si auspica possa essere presto gestita dall’Università di Catania è il luogo ideale per il torrentismo. Qui, infatti, e nella vicina gola di Bolo, profondissima, i più arditi possono recarsi all’interno degli ingrottati, tra le veloci acque, per ammirare in tutta la loro bellezza i giochi delle lave, pseudopoligonali, che incrociano i loro prismi in un effetto grafico di nero su nero che raggiunge il culmine cromatico nelle giornate di caldo sole primaverile.

Actually the bridge is not really Saracen, but is a blend of different construction works. Its piers, both the two main ones and those of the side arches, all rigorously endowed with hydrodynamic structure, were built in the Roman age, probably the imperial age (1st-2nd century AD) and are part of the works for the Catina-Centorippe (i.e. Catania-Centuripe) road, which, as various ancient sources tell us, was the equivalent of the Palermo-Catania motorway at that time.
Subsequently, the Roman bridge having collapsed, at least one other bridge, an Aragonese one, was built on the Roman piers, which, with collapses and restoration, is still extant.
The area but which it is hoped will soon be entrusted to Catania University, is an ideal place for canyoning.
Here, and in the nearby Bolo gorge, which is very deep, the boldest can get inside the caves, amid
the swift waters, to admire in all its beauty the play of the lava, which is pseudo-polygonal, interweaving prisms in a graphic effect of black on black that reaches the chromatic climax on days of warm spring sun.
