Unica riserva della provincia di
Enna ad essere stata affidata all’Università, venne istituita per la
“conservazione e la tutela di un ambiente umido di particolare interesse
botanico.”
Qui infatti, lungo il vallone scavato dalle acque che scendono da un
crinale degli Erei per dirigersi verso la vallata del Dittaino, cresce
ancora la fitta vegetazione a galleria che un tempo doveva coprire il
corso della maggior parte dei fiumi dell’interno siciliano. Molte
fanerofite ed emicrittofite, dominate dalla presenza di pioppo nero e
gatterino, di salice bianco, delle capre e rosso, olmo minore e nocciolo a
coprire canneti popolati da tifa mazzasorda, dal carice, dall’epilobio e
dal giunco che le massaie agirine coglievano per avvolgervi intorno la
pasta dei maccheroni di casa.
Questa galleria, oggi in alcuni tratti interrotta dall’attraversamento di
strade interpoderali, è un’oasi di pace e di fresco.
Tra l’ombra degli alberi, luogo di ricovero per il picchio e per
l’istrice, per la volpe e per il ramarro, cresce una prateria di equiseto
che con i suoi sottilissimi rametti appena toccati dal sole acquista una
parvenza eterea e quasi magica.
La riserva si estende lungo il fiume per circa 194, 3 ettari (63,7 in Zona
A e 130,6 in Zona B). é raggiungibile anche a piedi da Agira e può essere
visitata sia chiedendo agli uffici centrali dell’Università di Catania, o
al locale Circolo della Legambiente. |

The only reserve in Enna province
that has been placed under the care of the University was set up for the
conservation and the tutelage of a humid environment of particular
botanical interest.
The reason is that along the big valley hewn out by the waters coming down
from a ridge in the Erei and heading towards the valley of the Dittaino
river, there still grows the thick tunnel vegetation that once must have
covered the course of most rivers in inland Sicily.
There are many phanerophytes and hemicryptophytes, dominated by the
presence of poplar, white willows, lesser elm and hazelnut trees covering
canebrakes populated by greater reed-mace, carices, willowherb and reeds
that Agira housewives picked to wrap it round homemade macaroni.
This tunnel, now interrupted in some stretches by roads between estates,
is an oasis of peace and coolness.
Amid the shade of the trees, a place of shelter for the woodpecker and the
hedgehog, the fox and the green lizard, there is a meadow of horsetail
that with its very thin branches barely touched by the sun takes on an
ethereal and almost magic look.
The reserve is small, and along the river banks covers a surface area of
about 194.3 hectares (63.7 of which are in Zone A and 130.6 in Zone B).
You can also get to it on foot from Agira, and to visit it you can either
apply to the central offices of Catania University or to the local
Legambiente office. |
