The hill of the town of Rossomano

Questa area, dominata dal pino domestico e dall’eucalipto, ma non di rado popolata anche da querce, lecci, sorbi, castagni, peri selvatici, e da un folto corteggio floristico erbaceo ed arbustivo, nasconde una lunga storia di utilizzazione umana. Qui, infatti, sorgeva un centro, nato nell’età del rame (come dimostrano vari resti di contrada Serra Casazze e di Serra Crovacchio) e vissuto sino al 1394, anno in cui, per punire il feudatario Scaloro degli Uberti, dichiarato reo di fellonia insieme ai Chiaramonte, il paese di Rossomanno venne raso al suolo insieme agli altri feudi della fazione latina.
I feudi vennero concessi alle Università delle vicine città demaniali e gli abitanti superstiti vennero deportati nelle stesse tant’è che ancora ai nostri giorni ad Enna esistono quartieri che parlano un dialetto differente dall’ennese, detto “funnurisanu” che altro non è se non il vecchio dialetto di Cundrò e Rossomanno.

This area, dominated by the domestic pine and the eucalyptus, but often also populated by oaks, holm oaks, service trees, chestnut trees and wild pear trees, and having a dense covering of flowers and shrubs, also conceals a long history of human utilisation. Here in the Bronze Age there was a settlement, as is demonstrated by various vestiges in the Serra Casazze and Serra Crovacchio areas. It was inhabited down to 1394, the year in which, to punish the feudatory Scaloro degli Uberti, declared guilty of treachery together with the Chiaramontes, the village of Rossomanno was razed to the ground together with the fiefs of the Latin faction, i.e. Polino, Gatta and Cundrò.
The fiefs were conceded to the Universities of the nearby demesnal towns and the surviving inhabitants were deported to these towns. Indeed, in Enna there are quarters where people speak a different dialect than the Enna one, known as ‘funnurisanu’, which is nothing but the old dialect of Cundrò and Rossomanno.

Del paese, posto sulla parte superiore della montagna omonima, rimangono diverse vestigia: l’acropoli siculo ellenizzata di Serra Casazze con un lungo muro di cinta munito di torrette di difesa, diversi lembi di necropoli con testimonianze di antichi riti incineratori e di deposizione a “campi di crani”, tombe circolari, case, magazzini, il basamento della torre feudale degli Uberti, una chiesetta tardo bizantina a tre navate con inumazioni a martyrion ed infine un convento, costruito sui resti del paese distrutto, ed utilizzato come eremo sino ad una cinquantina di anni fa.
La riserva è quindi una sorta di parco archeologico immerso nel verde di un vasto bosco. Il territorio è facilmente percorribile sia a piedi che in mountain bike e sono molte le stradelle aperte al passaggio dei motorizzati.
Una visita potrà iniziare dalla zona del vivaio forestale di Ronza, lungo la SS 117 Enna - Piazza Armerina. Qui l’azienda Demaniale delle Foreste, ente gestore della riserva, ha creato una delle maggiori aree attrezzate della Sicilia, capace di ospitare anche centinaia di persone,
con sedili, panche, tavolini, fontane, voliere e chiudende ove pascolano cinghiali, daini, istrici.
Il vivaio è anche attrezzato di biblioteca ambientale e di erbario, è sempre controllato da un guardiano ed al suo interno sta prendendo forma il nuovo Centro di Recupero per i Selvatici che verrà gestito dalla LIPU di Enna.

The village was on the upper part of the mountain of the same name. Various vestiges of it remain: the Hellenised Siculo acropolis of Serra Casazze with a long boundary wall with protruding defence towers, various stretches of necropolis with signs of ancient incineration rituals and of deposition in “skull fields”, circular tombs, houses, warehouses, the base of the feudal tower of the Ubertis, a little late Byzantine church with a nave and two side aisles, with Martyrion burials, and lastly a convent, built on the remains of the destroyed village, and used as a hermitage until about fifty years ago.
Hence the reserve is a sort of archaeological park immersed in the greenery of a vast wood. It is easy to go round the area either on foot or on a mountain bike, and there are quite a lot of tracks you can drive along.
A visit can start from the area of the Ronza tree nursery, along state highway 117b from Enna to Piazza Armerina. Here the Demesne Forestry Board, which runs the reserve, has created one of the biggest picnic areas in Sicily, for hundreds of people, with seats, benches, tables, taps, aviaries; the grazing areas for boars, deer and hedgehogs are closed off.
The nursery also has an environmental library and a herbarium, always controlled by a guardian, and inside a new centre for the recovery of wild animals, to be run by LIPU in Enna, is getting going.

Vicino all’area della Ronza si potranno ammirare le incredibili forme delle pietre incantate, o pupi ballerini, una sorta di cerchio magico che la fantasia popolare ha voluto attribuire ad un sortilegio che pietrificò una danza sabbatica ma che in realtà sono il frutto della geologia del luogo.
Da Ronza si dipartono decine di sentieri, tutti abbastanza facili se percorsi con una guida o, comunque, da chi, attrezzato di bussola e carta topografica saprà destreggiarsi nel bosco a tratti molto fitto.

Near the Ronza area you can easily get on foot to a place where you can admire the incredible shapes of the enchanted stones, or dancing dolls, a sort of magic circle that popular imagination has chosen to attribute to a sort of spell that petrified a sabbatic dance but which is actually due to the geology of the place.
There are tens of paths that start from Ronza. They are quite easy if you have a guide or if you have a compass and topographic map so as not to get lost in the wood, which is sometimes quite thick.
